What is Compost
It is defined as "stably decomposed organic matter." In other words, compost is the "brown fluffy stuff" you find in healthy soil that provides plants with essential nutrients. Compost is produced when formerly living things go through the process of aerobic decomposition. This process driven by oxygen-breathing bacteria and fungi.
A living Product
Quality compost is complex ecosystem full of soil microbes and invertebrates that are responsible for decomposition and recycling nutrients.
Compost Uses
Gardening/vegetable production
Landscaping and tree planting
Nursery/growing Media
Turf and lawn maintenance and establishment
Slope stabilization
Erosion control
Storm water management
Soil Reclamation and remediation
Benefits of Compost
Improves soil structure, porosity and density, thus creating a better environment for plant roots.
Increases infiltration and permeability of heavy soils, thus reducing erosion and runoff. Improves water holding capacity, thus reducing water loss and leaching in sandy soils.
Supplies a variety of macro and micronutrients. May control or suppress certain soil-borne plant pathogens.
Supplies significant quantities of organic matter.
Improves cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soils and growing media, thus improving their ability to hold nutrients for plant use.
Supplies beneficial microorganisms to soils and growing media.
Improves and stabilizes soil pH.
Can bind and degrade specific pollutants.
Compost Vs Fertilizer
Compost: a soil amendment that improves the chemical, biological and physical characteristics of soil. Meaning, it improves all of the important attributes of soil. It provides a more complete range of plant nutrients over a longer period of time; it introduces beneficial soil microbes; and it improves the soil's ability to prevent flooding by absorbing water and deliver it plant life.
Fertilizer: supplies plants with the three basic nutrients for plant growth. This artificial, salt based product kills the beneficial organisms that are essential for healthy and productive soil. Fertilizers are notable for being fast acting, but their use contributes to water pollution when they get washed away by the rain and watering.
